The River Mersey is between 1 and 3 miles wide, and yet only a narrow channel is safe for ships.

Y-Shaped Groyne – Liverpool Bay

As the tide goes out a y-shaped groyne is revealed on New Brighton beach.

Liverpool Bay just after a neap high tide of 7.55m. The sandbanks are submerged, as is most of the concrete groyne.
